Introduction
In this module, students will study both micro and macroeconomics. Microeconomics is the study of the choices individuals and businesses make and the influence of governments. Macroeconomics is the study of the performance of the national economy and the global economy.
Micro and macroeconomics interact and mutually influence each other. Macroeconomics (inflation, exchange rates, unemployment) influences the choices of individuals and firms on what to buy and what to make. Governments via taxes and subsidies also influences individual behavior. Traditionally the outcomes of economic choices were considered as rational choices. This paradigm is shifting increasingly. Do we in fact make the right choices? Deforestation, global warming and increasing CO2 emissions, inequality and ocean patches full of plastics give serious doubts to this rational behavior. You will further develop an understanding of the economic and business implications of sustainability issues and be able to evaluate the social and environmental impact of businesses and industries.
