The Movement Journey Compass centers on the question of what a smooth movement journey from care to home looks like. This large-scale national study provides insight into the organization, safeguarding, and financing required for such a movement journey.

Background

Physical activity is healthy, also for (former) patients and people with disabilities. There are many good initiatives to encourage people to be more active, but these initiatives in healthcare and in the sports and exercise sector do not (yet) align well with each other. In addition, funding is often temporary, and not everyone is reached. As a result, people cannot follow a smooth movement journey from therapeutic exercise in healthcare to independent physical activity at home. The positive effects of physical activity are still underutilized

The Research

The researchers of the Beweegreiskompas (Movement Journey Compass) are gathering insights into what is needed for a smooth movement journey. Professionals in healthcare, sports, municipalities, welfare, education, and research, as well as (former) patients, are contributing to this effort.

This local action research takes place in the regions of Amsterdam, Drenthe, Haaglanden, and Zeeland. Best practices are evaluated nationwide, overarching research. Ultimately, this project will result in a toolbox that provides concrete tools to realize a smooth physical activity journey, called the ‘Beweegreiskompas’.

The Hague University of Applied Sciences is conducting action research in the Haaglanden region. The movement journey of people with cancer and people in rehabilitation is central here. We map out the existing physical activity initiatives and investigate how these initiatives can be connected.

Collaboration partners

The Hague University of Applied Sciences is working on the Movement Journey Compass through the research groups in Oncological Care and Assistive Technology for Mobility and Sports. In doing so, it collaborates with a group of external partners, including the Municipality of The Hague, Basalt, Sportbelang SGK, Oncology Information Center (Haaglanden Medical Center), Bewegen Werkt, Sportief Besteed Groep, Sport en Welzijn Leidschendam-Voorburg, ROC Mondriaan, and Leiden University.

In the national, overarching research of the Movement Journey Compass, researchers from The Hague University of Applied Sciences collaborate with UMC Groningen, Beweeghuis, Amsterdam UMC, Maastricht University, Inholland University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam, Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, and HZ University of Applied Sciences. Additionally, there is collaboration with a large number of national patients, sports, movement, healthcare, welfare, government, and education organizations.

Duration

This project runs from November 2024 through August 2027.
