From the Centres of Expertise (CoE) Global and Inclusive Learning and Mission Zero of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, researchers collaborate on education that aligns with the major issues of our time. An example of this is the book Sustainable Education, which was launched on March 19 during an event in the Speakers’ Corner of The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

Transition to Sustainability

The book is a result of the research project Handbook of Regenerative Pedagogy and Didactics and was made possible thanks to support from the knowledge agenda theme “Transition to Sustainability” of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. From CoE Global and Inclusive Learning, researcher Rosa Groen was involved in the project, together with researcher Aniek Draaisma from CoE Mission Zero. The book was written in collaboration with 20 other authors.

Practical tools

The reason for the book is clear: climate change; economic shifts and social inequality are no longer abstract themes, but rather the daily reality, and that also demands something from education.

Sustainable Education provides practical tools for this. The book connects theory to concrete examples from educational practice and invites teachers to approach sustainability not as a separate topic, but as an integral part of education. The Inner Development Goals serve as an important guideline in this, linking personal development to social responsibility.

A necessity

According to Rosa Groen, the challenge lies mainly in translating it into practice. “Sustainability is no longer a choice, but a necessity in the curriculum. The question is how you make topics like climate change or social justice workable and discussable in education.”

The book deliberately starts close by and then connects it to bigger questions about pedagogy, didactics, and the role of education in a world in transition. In doing so, it aligns well with the mission of CoE Global and Inclusive Learning to contribute to inclusive, future-oriented, and socially engaged education.

Not the end but a starting point

The book launch was moreover not an endpoint, but precisely a starting point for further cooperation and development. In addition to the book, work is underway on a digital learning environment, additional teaching methods, and opportunities for co-creation with teachers and students. The ambition is to continue building together on an educational practice that does justice to people, society, and the planet.

NIVOZ  also paid attention to the publication and emphasized the importance of honest, inclusive, and hopeful education in times of planetary challenges. As Rosa Groen summarized during the launch: “What unites us is the conviction that education can contribute to a just society within planetary boundaries.”

The book Sustainable Education is available from Noordhof Publishers.
