The voice of nature often goes unheard – and that needs to change. In collaboration with Accez, this project investigates how the Bollenstreek can become sustainable and future-resilient. Students from various disciplines create visions of the future using interactive prototypes that raise awareness and offer actionable perspectives to growers and policymakers.

The ornamental horticulture sector is under pressure: traditional business models are no longer sustainable. Nature – a crucial but unheard voice – is frequently overlooked. This project contributes to an ecocentric perspective, where humans and nature coexist in balance.

By having students work interdisciplinarily on sustainability transitions, the Dune and Bulb Region can benefit from the new narratives they bring. A wonderful initiative!

Objective

To develop sustainable narratives and business models for a nature-inclusive Bollenstreek.

Target Audience

Ornamental horticulture companies, policymakers, investors, and chain partners such as supermarkets and banks. Additionally, students from Business Administration, Public Administration, and UX Design programs collaborate to create actionable perspectives for this sector.

Method

The project uses participatory action research and design-based research. Students give nature a voice through narratives and prototypes, analyze the economic context, and visualize future scenarios for sustainable development.

Outcomes

Interactive prototypes with sustainable future scenarios for the ornamental horticulture sector. These tangible visions support stakeholders in making decisions toward a sustainable transition.

Impact

This project raises awareness and stimulates the development of sustainable business models. Students and stakeholders are actively involved, contributing to policymaking and a future-proof sector.
