What is the social value of top sporting events? That is the question at the heart of the research programme Moves, in which the Impact of Sport research group is participating. The programme started in late 2023 and runs for four years. Moves is a programme of Zon MW.
Context
The Netherlands has a reputation for hosting appealing top sporting events. It hosts well-known annual events such as the FBK Games (athletics), the TT in Assen or the ABN-AMRO tennis tournament. The Netherlands also regularly hosts European Championships and World Cups as well as major cycling events. But what do all these events bring to society? Who are the people attending those events? How much money do they spend, and what do these events do to them? Does it inspire them to play sports? Does it make them feel proud when the Netherlands is successful, does it make them feel more connected? And how do you actually do that, organise a top sporting event?
These are the questions that the Moves research programme addresses.

This programme started in September 2023 and runs for four years.
