Purpose of the project

The so-called Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Questionnaire (AFCCQ) was developed in 2020 by The Hague University of Applied Sciences, AFEdemy and Hulsebosch Advies on behalf of The Hague Municipality to find out from older people themselves how they perceive the age-friendliness of their city or community. The AFCCQ was first tested and validated in The Hague, the first age-friendly city in the Netherlands. With the project, we as The Hague University of Applied Sciences contribute to improving higher satisfaction in a number of domains among older people.

Target group

Municipalities and other stakeholder engaged in age-friendly policies.

Approach

Using the AFCCQ results, municipalities or other stakeholders can adopt, introduce or adjust more targeted age-friendly policies in their municipalities. By repeating the AFCCQ after two or more years, the municipality can see whether the policies introduced have resulted in higher satisfaction among the elderly.

The AFCCQ consists of 23 questions on the different domains of life of older people (65+). Asked how they experience their social or physical environment, such as their living environment, neighbourhood or transport options, and the opportunities they have to meet others, the respect they experience or the care they receive. In addition, they are asked about their financial situation: whether they can make ends meet on their income or live comfortably from it.

Meanwhile, the AFCCQ is being made suitable for more and more countries by translating and validating it. As a result, the AFCCQ is available in more and more languages. This page publishes all versions of the validated AFCCQ.

Duration

The project started in 2020; it is an ongoing project for several years.
