Two awards for THUAS at International Moot Court Competition
25 June 2026
We may share our city with the International Criminal Court (ICC), but we certainly did not enjoy any home advantage during the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition.
Competitors came from every corner of the world and included teams from major universities. In the end, however, none of that mattered, because Team THUAS brought home two awards!
The team consisted of students Kaja Pilatowicz, Aleksandra Świrk, Hannah Wenzl and Marlena Faisal. They were coached by BRV-Law lecturers Christine Tremblay and Michail Vagias. The team won the award for Best Prosecution Memorial and finished as First Runner-up in the Prosecution Team Overall category.
A long road
The preparation began months ago. For the first six months, the students worked on their written memorials before turning their attention to the oral rounds. Their prosecution memorial was even ranked the best in the entire competition. Kaja looks back on the experience with pride: “We worked incredibly hard, but knowing that, for a moment, you were the best in the world at something makes it all worthwhile.”
That hard work often continued late into the night. Marlena explains: “Even a misplaced full stop or comma in a footnote could cost you points. The fact that we finished with zero penalty points shows just how detailed and precise our work was.”
Growing as a team
Winning an award is fantastic, but the personal and professional growth gained throughout the process shouldn’t be underestimated. Aleksandra says: “I can really see the progress my teammates made. There is a huge difference between where we started and where we ended up.”
For Hannah, the achievement feels even more special because they competed as Bachelor’s students against teams that also included Master’s students. “The feeling when we reached the quarter-finals was indescribable. Sitting together, holding hands and waiting for our number to be called. It gave me goosebumps.”
Green pride
This year, 94 teams from 88 countries took part, making it one of the largest international criminal law competitions in the world. THUAS is incredibly proud of the achievements of Kaja, Aleksandra, Hannah, Marlena, Christine and Michail.
