The digital euro is on the horizon. What does the future of our monetary system look like?

As a New Finance lecturer, Martijn van der Linden is seeking the answer to this question. His research within the Centre of Expertise Digital Operations & Finance focuses on new forms of digital money, mechanisms in the monetary system that cause inequality and financial instability, and reform proposals such as the liberalization of banks.

"The monetary system can and should be different," Martijn believes. "And the time for change is now." Recently, the European Commission proposed the potential issuance of a digital euro. Martijn: "This proposal mainly protects the status quo, the interests of banks. However, there are significant societal benefits to be gained. A well-designed digital euro has the potential to enhance long-term financial stability and promote competence and innovation, thereby improving and reducing the cost of financial services. The choices we make in the coming year are crucial for the development of the monetary system."

Conference

Together with Carlijn Kingma (cartographer), Thomas Bollen (financial investigative journalist), and other partners, Martijn is organizing a three-day conference on the future of our monetary system. The conference will take place in The Hague from September 6th to 8th, 2023.

Inaugural Lecture

In his inaugural lecture on September 8th, Martijn will share his vision on the digitalization of money, with a special focus on the digital euro. Additionally, prominent economists Menno Middeldorp (Global Head RaboResearch) and Theo Kocken (Professor of Risk Management at VU, CEO of Cardano Development) will discuss the international dimension of the monetary system. You can also expect a political debate about the digital euro featuring three politicians: Mahir Alkaya (Member of the Dutch House of Representatives, SP), Michiel Hoogeveen (Member of the European Parliament, JA21), and Paul Tang (Member of the European Parliament, PvdA).
