CHAI: dialogue about responsible AI use in education
8 July 2026
Researchers from Learning Technology & Analytics are developing with CHAI a method with which students and teachers make agreements together about responsible use of AI in education.
Within the Centre of Expertise Global and Inclusive Learning, researchers from the research group Learning Technology & Analytics are working on new ways to responsibly integrate generative AI into higher education. An example of this is CHAI (Contextual Honor Codes for AI Literacy and Academic Integrity): a project that supports students and teachers at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in jointly making agreements on AI use within educational activities.
Principle of a conscious choice
The rapid development of generative AI is changing the way students learn and teachers shape and assess education. Although regulations such as the EU AI Act and THUAS’ AI policy provide important frameworks, many questions remain unanswered.
According to senior researcher Manika Garg: “We all know that AI exists. Teachers and students use it, but there are currently no boundaries. Dialogue is a must in the pursuit of student competence, AI literacy, and academic integrity: the core objectives of CHAI.”
CHAI is based on the principle of conscious choice and combines two pillars: AI regulation and shared AI literacy. Through a structured dialogue, students and teachers together determine how AI can be used within a course or assignment.
AI Honor Codes
CHAI translates broad and legal guidelines into concrete agreements in the form of AI Honor Codes. During CHAI sessions, students and teachers discuss various educational activities and determine for each component what level of AI use is appropriate.
Participants also receive information about the possibilities, limitations, and risks of generative AI. In this way, CHAI also contributes to the development of shared AI literacy.
Multidisciplinary project
The project is funded by the THUAS AI Hub and is currently in the pilot phase. The first pilot took place within Public Administration and Government Communication programmes and led to increased awareness of responsible AI use and better mutual understanding between teachers and students.
CHAI is a multidisciplinary project in which expertise comes together in the fields of AI and AI literacy; ethics and law; and co-creation. In this way, the project works on an educational practice in which AI is used consciously, fairly, and responsibly.
