Accelerate the Sustainability Transition with the Flexpertise Strategy Scan
14 July 2025
Over the past year, researchers Marieke Gombault and Lonneke Frie from the Research Group Sustainable Talent Development have developed an innovative method

The Flexpertise Strategy Scan. This method helps organizations accelerate their internal transition towards sustainability by strengthening flexpertise: the ability of employees to adapt to a changing demand for knowledge and skills.
In the shift towards becoming a sustainable organization, it is essential that employees develop complementary expertise to remain valuable. The Flexpertise Strategy Scan identifies improvement opportunities for 16 organizational factors that increase flexpertise. This allows the organization to take measures that will increase employees' knowledge and skills in sustainability.
These include factors such as a clear transition vision, autonomy, culture, mindset, and insight into future expertise needs. The scan links these factors to scientifically grounded measures that organizations can implement right away.
In the coming fall, an open-source manual will be published to enable organizations to work with the scan. In doing so, they will be better equipped to empower and motivate their employees to contribute to the sustainable transition.
