This also means an increasing need for student housing. That is why educational institutions, the Municipality of The Hague, and student housing provider DUWO are working together on the Hague Student Housing Action Plan. Unit Manager of Student Services, Hanneke Kadijk: “Student housing is not just a matter of building, it’s above all a matter of collaboration.”

In the coming years, student housing providers will work on constructing new student accommodations while also exploring possibilities in surrounding municipalities. “The Hague simply faces a major shortage of student housing”, Hanneke explains. “By putting this jointly on the agenda, as we do in the action plan, we can take much more targeted steps.”

Rethinking the approach

The action plan focuses not only on the construction of new student residences, but also on making better use of existing space in the city. “We are looking at transforming vacant buildings, enabling more room-sharing, and encouraging host-family rental. Developments around the Central Innovation District near Hollands Spoor and The Hague Central Station also offer opportunities to bring living, studying, and working closer together.”

Support from THUAS

In addition to city-level collaboration, THUAS also supports students directly in finding housing. “We have agreements with student housing providers like DUWO to guarantee a supply of rooms, particularly for international and exchange students. Each year, this involves hundreds of rooms. At the same time, access to reliable information plays an important role, because students still regularly encounter scams or end up paying too much for too little. By informing them properly, we hope to prevent this.”
