Looking back: Lighthouse Film Club 2024–2025

The very first year of the Lighthouse Film Club has come to an end – and what a great start it was! With a mix of surprising, funny, and moving films, each screening brought something special to campus. We kicked things off with the heartwarming dramedy The Holdovers, followed by a journey into the magical world of Spirited Away. Other highlights included the dark satire American Psycho, the inspiring Dead Poets Society, and thought-provoking films like Parasite and The Apprentice.

But more than just watching films, the club quickly became a space to connect – to talk about what we’d seen, what moved us, or just to hang out and share ideas. Thursday nights turned into a fun, informal way to meet others and spark conversation.

We ended the year with Atonement, in collaboration with both the Dutch and English book clubs – a wonderful crossover between literature and film.

We’ll be back in 2025–2026! The new screening dates are already listed below – we’ll announce the film titles soon.

What are we going to do?

We're going to watch movies! And of course, we'll also discuss these films together. After the screening, we'll talk about the film, focusing on aspects such as content, technique, and cinematography. Additionally, this offers a place where you can meet new people who share the same passion for film.

Your hosts of the Film Club are Thijs Bos and Chris Heydra. Together they have 13 years of experience with film analysis and also taught courses and workshops at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and the Royal Academy of Art (KABK). Together they will guide you to see what others do not quickly notice in film. But beware, once you know the subtle tricks of the film you will never watch a movie the same again.

Little Miss Sunshine 23 September 2025

Little Miss Sunshine is a 2006 American drama film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The filmmakers received more than sixty awards for it, including two Academy Awards (Alan Arkin for Best Supporting Actor and Michael Arndt for Best Original Screenplay) and two BAFTAs (for the same categories).

Seven-year-old Olive Hoover lives in a rather unusual family. Her father, Richard, is a failed motivational coach; her brother, Dwayne, has taken a vow of silence; her uncle Frank is gay and suicidal; her grandfather Edwin is addicted to heroin; and her mother Sheryl is slowly starting to lose her grip. When Olive learns that she has qualified for the finals of the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, the whole family decides to travel from Albuquerque to California in their old Volkswagen van.
