Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American film by director Peter Weir. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the then 38-year-old Tom Schulman.
The film is set around Welton Academy, a high school in the state of Vermont, in 1959. At this boarding school, boys are trained to gain admission to an Ivy League university under the motto "tradition, honor, discipline, excellence." The English teacher retired the previous semester and is succeeded by John Keating, played by Robin Williams. Keating himself is a former Welton student and, unlike the other teachers, challenges his students to become free thinkers and not to adopt the opinions of their teachers or parents.
