Arrival Services
Starting your studies in the Netherlands comes with a few important practical steps. Don’t worry, we’ll guide you through the process and make it as smooth as possible.
Registering at the Municipality (BSN)
If you are going to live in The Hague, you are required to register with the municipality. This registration is essential, as you will receive your BSN (Burger Service Number), a personal identification number you need for things like opening a Dutch bank account for example.
To make this process easier, we work together with The Hague International Centre to offer a fast and simplified registration process for students.
During the summer, you will receive an email from us with instructions on how to book your appointment.
Important:
We strongly advise you to schedule your appointment as soon as you receive this email. Appointment slots can fill up quickly, and you will need your BSN for important matters.
Residence Permit (IND)
If you have a non-EU/EEA nationality, you will likely need a residence permit to study in the Netherlands.
Collecting your residence permit
The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) organizes central collection days where students can pick up their residence permits. These take place at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.
You will be invited to make an appointment once your residence permit is ready. This invitation is based on updates we receive from the IND. All non-EU students in the Netherlands must collect their residence permit in Utrecht, it is not possible to collect it in The Hague
Providing biometrics (if applicable)
Some students need to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) before their residence permit can be issued. This applies to students who do not require an entry visa (MVV), and have not yet submitted biometrics
If this applies to you you will receive an email from us after we receive your approval letter from the IND.
You can then schedule an appointment with the IND to provide your biometrics
Tuberculosis (TB) Health Check
Depending on your nationality, you may be required to undergo a tuberculosis (TB) test after arrival in the Netherlands. This is part of the residence permit requirements.
The test is carried out by the GGD (Municipal Health Service) and it includes a simple examination with a chest X-ray. The cost is €60, to be paid directly to the GGD
If this requirement applies to you, you will receive an invitation with details about your appointment (date, time, and location) and what documents to bring.
