Open Access publishing means that you make a publication accessible to everyone, online and free of charge. The Open Access model is opposed to the subscription model, in which readers have access to research publications for a fee, usually through a library. 

Open Access offers benefits for everyone. As a researcher you reach a larger audience, your research publication will be found faster by a wide audience and therefore often used more. Other researchers can build on your research and your publications can be used in education without restrictions. Resulting in more citations. In addition, in your own research you will also benefit greatly from access to Open Access published research material. 

The Hague University of Applied Sciences believes that the results of or publications on government-funded research should be freely accessible to as many people as possible. This means that as a researcher you will publish as much Open Access as possible. In the online training Open Access publishing you will learn all the ins and outs of Open Access publishing. 

The training discusses the so-called golden and green routes of Open Access publishing. It covers terms such as quality, the Article Processing Charge, the Creative Commons licence and the HBO Knowledge Base. It also looks at aspects involving copyright. You will read about the advantages, misconceptions and purpose of Open Access publishing. To clarify what Open Access publishing means in practice, three dilemmas are presented. Finally, you can assess your knowledge in a 10-question test.

It will take you an hour in total to go through all of the modules. Afterwards you can download a certificate of completion. However, you can also choose to only consult the modules you find relevant. By first taking the test, for example, you can determine what knowledge you already have about Open Access publishing. You can then follow the corresponding modules to fill in the gaps in your knowledge.
