A film that raises questions
What if “more growth” doesn’t automatically mean a better world?
On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, you’ll have the opportunity at The Hague University of Applied Sciences to watch the documentary The Cost of Growth, before its wider release in cinemas.
About the documentary
The documentary, created by Anuna de Wever and Lena Hartog, follows climate activists and thinkers as they explore a fundamental question: who are we growing the economy for, and at what cost?
From protests across Europe to communities directly experiencing the impact of climate change, the film shows that sustainability is not just about technological solutions, but about how our societies are structured.
Watch together, reflect together
This is not a light film. That’s why we won’t just watch it - we’ll take time to reflect together.
After the screening, there will be space for an open conversation with researchers from The Hague University of Applied Sciences. Not a formal panel, but an open and informal conversation where we explore what the film brings up. What does this mean for how we live, work and learn? And what could we each contribute?
You’re welcome to actively join the conversation, or simply listen.
Pizza & conversation
After the film, you’re invited to stay. We’ll provide pizza and drinks, so you can hang around, talk, or just take a moment to process what you’ve seen.
Why this event?
This screening is organized in the context of the “Transition to Sustainability” theme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Centre of Expertise Global and Inclusive Learning and the Centre of Expertise Mission Zero.
It’s a starting point: a chance to share the questions we’re exploring and how we, as a university of applied sciences, aim to contribute to societal transitions.
Registration
The event is open to students, staff, and external guests.
The film is in English with English subtitles. Stick around after, join the conversation (or just listen), and grab a slice of pizza.
An event by The Lighthouse
