We want to be an inclusive university of applied sciences. A place for dialogue. A place where differences can exist. But what does that mean when viewpoints clash? When words cause friction? When a conversation feels liberating to one person and threatening to another?

Freedom of expression is a fundamental value. At the same time, we know that freedom without responsibility can lead to exclusion or a sense of insecurity. And safety without room for difference can easily turn into silence or self-censorship.

In higher education we see how tensions in society enter our lecture halls, our social media feeds and our own buildings. Protest, activism and strong political positions are part of a democratic society. But how far does that space extend within our community? When do we protect the conversation? When do we draw boundaries? And who decides?

Our starting point is that debate and protest should always go hand in hand with respect, openness and care for one another. That may sound obvious, but in practice it is rarely simple. What one person sees as a legitimate viewpoint may feel to someone else like a denial of their right to exist. We will not avoid that tension.

In conversation

Together with Diederik Brink, we will explore real dilemmas from higher education. Not as a theoretical exercise, but as an open and honest conversation about where things become difficult.

Among other questions, we will discuss:

  • Is inclusivity limitless — or does it require clear boundaries?
  • Can we make space for viewpoints that exclude others?
  • How do you engage in conversation with someone whose convictions fundamentally conflict with your own values?
  • When does tolerance become complicity — and when do boundaries become censorship?

An inclusive community is not built by giving space only to those who think alike. It emerges when we take differences seriously, without losing sight of one another.

Broad Dialogue

This event is part of the Broad Dialogue series. Much is happening in the Netherlands and around the world. These developments underline the importance of open conversations, mutual understanding and connection. As a knowledge institution, we have a responsibility to facilitate dialogue: to discuss the tensions that exist in our society, to recognize and value different backgrounds and perspectives, and in doing so contribute to a more inclusive and just world.
