Team Energy in Transition

In August 2018 Sander was appointed professor of Energy in Transition. In addition to his work as a professor at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, he holds a KIVI (Royal Institution of Engineers in the Netherlands) chair.

Baldiri Salcedo studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia and completed his PhD at the Technical University of Delft on the management of energy renovations in buildings. His work focuses on the analysis of energy performance and energy flexibility of buildings and districts through monitoring and computer simulation.

Ruben studied and did a PhD in Chemical Engineering at TU/e. After a short period as researcher with Corus, he began at Albemarle Catalysts. He worked on testing and development of catalysts, the last years predominantly on biomass-to-fuels and waste plastic oil (chemical recycling of plastics). Now he works on exploration of hydrogen as an energy carrier in the energy transition.

Sustainanillity has always had his special interest. Since 2010, he has been involved in both education and research surrounding the energy transition at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. His background revolves around systems theory, simulation and energy theory. At the research group Energy in Transition he specializes in these subjects. His main focus is on projects in which hydrogen has a significant role as an energy carrier.

Originally from Leiden, Matt began his academic journey with a year of IT at Leiden University of Applied Sciences before moving, with that technical foundation, to the bachelor's programme in Spatial Development | Climate & Management at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, which he completed in 2025. He is also certified in Charismatic Leadership, with a focus on professional leadership, self-direction and coaching leadership. During his graduation, he specialised in agent-based modelling simulation (ABMS) and systems thinking. He brings this combination of IT, leadership, spatial development and simulation to the Energy in Transition research group, where he has worked as a junior researcher since 2026. His work currently focuses on modelling and simulating energy systems in the built environment and on data-driven IT solutions for collecting energy data.

Mark studied Aerospace Engineering and completed his PhD at Delft University of Technology on the energy yield of airborne wind energy systems. His work within the Energy in Transition research group focuses on energy hubs that aim to optimally match energy demand with decentralized energy supply.

After completing a degree in HEAO-CE at THUAS, Martijn Sluiter worked for 25 years as a real estate manager for major (institutional) investors. Since June 2020, he has been a lecturer in Housing and Real Estate in the Facility Management programme. For project Smart THUAS, he focuses on improving the user experience of THUAS buildings.

Hendrik studied mathematics and physics and completed a Master’s degree in theoretical physics. After several years working in the financial sector, he has been a lecturer in applied physics at a university of applied sciences since 2023. Within the research group, he connects physics, engineering, and economic knowledge by developing socio-economic models for what is currently the hydrogen economy.

Patrick studied Civil Engineering, specialising in hydraulic engineering, after which he worked as a geotechnical consultant. He has been affiliated with THUAS since 2019, initially in education and, from 2024, also with the research group. Here, he deals with geotechnical and hydrological topics as the analysis and simulation of various subjects, particularly wind and solar energy as storage using battery systems. Patrick is also a jury member for the Recharge Earth Young Energy Leader Award for university (of applied science) graduates.

How might we realize the energy transition, as soon as possible? Peters research is focused on projects in our built environment: making our real estate sustainable (Paris Proof) and our operations (Zero Emissions); systems approach to district heating; and a just energy transition in Laakkwartier.

Pepijn is business development manager for Centre of Expertise Mission Zero and project manager for various energy projects in the research group Energy in Transition. Pepijn has a bachelor's degree in management of technology. He also works for HTM, the The Hague Public Transport organisation on sustainability and energy projects.
