Insomnia has many consequences for society. The effects of poor sleep can be seen, for example, in road safety, students’ academic performance, and overall quality of life. People dealing with stress or worries often experience insomnia. The Somnox can help improving sleep quality.

Consortium partners

Somnox B.V. is a MedTech company engaged in the design, production, and sales of the Somnox. The company has already successfully launched two products - the Somnox 1 and Somnox 2 - and is currently redeveloping the Somnox into an ‘intelligent sleep technology,’ known as the Living Somnox. This version uses IoT, sensor technology, and AI. The Somnox guides the user’s breathing rhythm in such a way that it slows down, creating a calming effect. As a result, users fall asleep more easily and comfortably, improving sleep quality and reducing stress levels.

The Hague University of Applied Sciences collaborates on this project with Somnox B.V. and Annovating B.V., a medical ICT company specializing in the implementation of AI in health applications. Schuldenlab070 is also a partner in this research. This organization brings together 28 national partners working on innovative solutions to address debt-related issues and combat poverty.

Objectives

The first goal of this project is to prepare the Living Somnox for market introduction. To achieve this, a machine learning model will be developed based on biofeedback data collected by the Somnox, combined with biofeedback from an external fitness tracker. The setup and configuration (‘wiring’) of the Living Somnox will be examined, and AI models will be developed and integrated accordingly. Extensive analyses of breathing and sleep will be conducted, along with the development of in-app data visualizations.

The second goal of this project is to involve residents of The Hague for knowledge sharing and to explore whether reducing insomnia can have a positive impact on addressing multi-problem situations. This research will examine the extent to which the Somnox can improve sleep quality and reduce perceived stress among people experiencing difficulties. Forty residents from the The Hague region will be recruited to participate in the user group. The Somnox will be tested by these participants to assess its effects on sleep quality, stress levels, and overall quality of life.
