The English Academic Preparation Programme helps you improve your English and academic skills and is a perfect springboard to your studies in the truly international city of The Hague. 

The English Academic Preparation programme is taught by The Hague Pathway College, as a close partner of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. The programme will help you gain the level of English and study skills you need to enroll in The Hague University of Applied Sciences English-language Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees. 

The students will work in an international and interactive learning environment, developing academic skills such as researching, academic reading and essay writing, as well as presenting skills and working in teams on projects.

In order to be admitted into the English Academic Preperation Programme you need to: 

  • be eligible for the follow up Bachelor's or Master's degree programme of your choice offered by The Hague University of Applied Sciences. 

  • meet the English entry requirements (see below)

Additional requirements 

  • students with a non-EU/EEA nationality need to have a valid residence permit during their study. 

  • students with a Chinese nationality need to have applied for a NUFFIC certificate before the deadline.

About The Hague 

Located in the heart of The Hague, our students get an all-round experience, from galleries packed with Dutch masters to idyllic beaches and parks, and buzzing nightclubs. As the International City of Peace, Justice and Security, The Hague is bursting with international legal institutions. Since 1913, the Peace Palace has been a centre of world justice, hosting the permanent Court of Arbitrations and the International Court of Justice. You'll also find the International Yugoslavia Tribunal, Europol and the International Criminal Court in The Hague, along with many other courts, tribunals and NGOs.  

About Holland 

Because we are a Dutch university of applied sciences, you'll experience a hands-on, open, minded and interactive learning environment. We employ a problem-solving approach, just like the real professional world, with exercises that nurture personal leadership skills, like games, debate and group work.  

Programme

As an English Academic Preparation Programme student, you will attend lessons that focus on English reading, writing, listening and speaking. Moreover, you will learn other essential academic skills such as debating, oral presentations and research. Throughout the course, you will also take part in group projects on different topics such as food and Dutch culture. Besides regular classes, students are divided into smaller coaching groups of 4 to 6 students. Coaching groups meet once or twice a week with their coach to focus on spoken English more intensively. 

Teaching and project periods

The teaching terms are very intensive, but relatively short, so that there is time to work on assignments and projects individually or in groups.  The September intake programme has 3 teaching terms and the January intake programme has 2 teaching terms.  Each teaching term is followed by an exam week. The exams aim to provide you with a reliable indication of how much your learning is progressing. During the projects, you will put the skills you have learned into practice and learn to collaborate with others in international teams. 
 
A typical teaching week will consist of 15-20 hours of classes/coaching sessions. Besides this, there is a considerable amount of homework and out-of-class assignments to be done, so be prepared to approach the programme as if it is a 40-hour working week.  

Learning materials 

Books and online learning materials are included in the tuition fee. Students have Wi-Fi access throughout the university and can make use of all the facilities the university has to offer. 
 
Many students come from a very different educational culture with different methods of learning. We focus on study skills that you will need to be successful at your Bachelor or Master studies. It is not about what teachers teach and students memorize. Students work together with teachers to generate new knowledge and master new skills. These skills need to be learnt and no matter how dedicated, effective and inspiring a teacher is, the learning has to be done by students. To make your learning more effective you need to constantly critically evaluate what you do and how you do things. The English Academic Preparation Programme will help you develop an effective learning style.  

Life at the English Academic Preparation Programme 

Besides the strong focus on enhancing your English language ability, the PREP programme aims to help you integrate into Dutch society and Dutch university life quickly and thoroughly so that you will be prepared for academic life in the Netherlands after the English Academic Preparation Programme.
