Taking a stand: Protest and Power in Sports
18 September 2025
14:00 - 15:00
Speakers' Corner

From the raised fists of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest on the NFL sidelines, and Kendrick Lamar’s striking Super Bowl performance—athletes and artists have long used the global stage of sport to challenge injustice and spark conversation.
In this interactive session, we’ll explore how protest in sports has evolved over time, drawing connections between past and present. Together, we’ll examine the role of race, representation, and resistance, and ask: What does it mean to take a stand today? And how do these acts of protest resonate beyond the stadium?
Expect to engage, reflect, and discuss.
This session is a reflection of what among other things will be discussed in the minor Art of Protest.
The Lighthouse Festival
This event is part of The Lighthouse Festival on September 18, 2025. Discover The Lighthouse, the debate and culture platform of The Hague University of Applied Sciences. There’s plenty to do all day at the central square: chat with Oscar, listen to Lisa Loeb and Daniel Paarlberg talk about conspiracy theories, or get a glitter tattoo. The festival wraps up with a talent show celebrating 10 years of The Lighthouse, open to both students and staff.

An event by The Lighthouse
