If white collar crimes are facilitated by well trained first class professionals who have already been thought the rules: what do we need to be doing differently? Clearly, it is not a question of the professional not knowing how to make a good or right decision, they know this. In most cases they know the right thing to do. So, the problem is more that there's a gap between what they have been taught, the head knowlegde that they have acquired and what they actually do when they get into the work field. How can we fill this gap?
Dr. Abiola Makinwa is a principal lecturer in the International and European Law programme with a special focus on anti-corruption law and policy. She has developed an online teaching module for students and professionals of all levels to teach them integrity skills and to become aware of their values and act on them.
The Integrity Digital Learning Module (IntegrityDLM) trains young professionals to become more resilient to ethical pressure by developing the student’s competence to act instead of teaching the student to know (as is typical in other moral education disciplines). Students develop moral reminders, moral commitments and moral reference points to encourage moral intentionality, as well as, an explicit moral vocabulary. By prescripting, developing and practising responses to ethical challenges in advance, using the IntegrityDLM, students develop the competences of integrity awareness and integrity assertiveness to help them prepare for the ethical challenges of the workfield and life.
