The Lighthouse Festival

September 18 · Main Campus
Yes! Finally! The Lighthouse Festival is here! This event gives students and staff a chance to explore The Lighthouse: the center for debate and culture at The Hague University of Applied Sciences.
All day long, there will be plenty to experience and do in and around the central square: from a nice conversation with Oscar and a talk with Lisa Loeb and Daniel Paarlberg about conspiracy theories to getting a real glitter tattoo. As a festive finale to The Lighthouse Festival - and to celebrate 10 years of The Lighthouse - we're organizing a talent show for both students and staff.
Come by, meet other students and staff, and get inspired. And always remember: life is like a circus!
Free entry, as always! You can join all activities without needing to sign up in advance.
Book Swap
11:00 - 16:00 · Atrium
We’re hosting another fun Book Swap! But we need your help to make it a success. Do you have books at home collecting dust? Give them a second life! Novels, thrillers, fantasy, non-fiction, everything is welcome, as long as it’s in good condition (please no study books). All languages are welcome.
You can drop off books from September 1, in the cargo bike near the main entrance in the Atrium at our main campus. You can also bring and swap books on the day of the event!
Art Lovers
11:00 - 16:00 · Atrium
You’re invited to take a seat on the bench, Pleased To Meet You. The artwork by Johannes Langkamp is a bench with hundreds of wheels. With this work the artist turns sitting still into a game.
Johannes Langkamp (1985) is a German artist who is based in Rotterdam ever since he was studying at the AKI in Enschede. Langkamp creates spatial work in which he often plays and experiments with the relation between space and flat surface. In his spatial work he often uses movement. For his video work, movement is his point of departure.
With the work "Pleased To Meet You", he created an object with which he transfers his curiosity and enthusiasm to play onto the visitor.

11:30 - 14:30 · Atrium
Fast poet Linda Blij writes sweet little poems on the spot on her old-fashioned typewriter for you. Stop by and be surprised by a personal little letter with a big meaning. Linda can be found at the Book Swap.

Lisa Loeb & Daniel Paarlberg
12:00 – 13:00 · Speakers' Corner
In this interactive and dynamic show, comedian Lisa Loeb and sociologist Daniel Paarlberg dive into the fascinating world of conspiracy theories and fake news. Why do intelligent people sometimes believe misleading information and how does that affect collaboration and decision-making within organizations? With humor, psychological quizzes, and surprising insights, they offer practical tools for effectively tackling misinformation. Of course, there will also be time for questions.
And we’ll provide a light lunch. After the lecture, the book Dit kan geen toeval zijn will be available for purchase and signing!
This is a Dutch spoken event.

Protest and Power in Sports
14:00 - 15:00 · Speakers' Corner
From the raised fists of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest on the NFL sidelines, and Kendrick Lamar’s striking Super Bowl performance, athletes and artists have long used the global stage of sport to challenge injustice and spark conversation.
In this interactive session, we’ll explore how protest in sports has evolved over time, drawing connections between past and present. Together, we’ll examine the role of race, representation, and resistance, and ask: What does it mean to take a stand today? And how do these acts of protest resonate beyond the stadium?
