September 18 · Main Campus

Yes! Finally! The Lighthouse Festival is here! This event gives students and staff a chance to explore The Lighthouse: the center for debate and culture at The Hague University of Applied Sciences.

All day long, there will be plenty to experience and do in and around the central square: from a nice conversation with Oscar and a talk with Lisa Loeb and Daniel Paarlberg about conspiracy theories to getting a real glitter tattoo. As a festive finale to the Lighthouse Festival—and to celebrate 10 years of The Lighthouse—we're organizing a colorful, vibrant talent show for both students and staff.

Come by, meet other students and staff, and get inspired. And always remember: life is like a circus!

Free entry, as always! You can join most activities without needing to sign up in advance.

Finished your book? Pass it on!

18 September · 11.00 - 16.00 uur · Atrium

On September 18 – during The Lighthouse Festival – we’re hosting another fun Book Swap! But we need your help to make it a success. Do you have books at home collecting dust? Give them a second life! Novels, thrillers, fantasy, non-fiction – everything is welcome, as long as it’s in good condition (please no study books). All languages are welcome.

You can drop off books from June 2 to July 4 and from September 1, in the cargo bike near the main entrance in the Atrium at our main campus. You can also bring and swap books on the day of the event!

As always, it's free for students and staff! No need to sign up.

Pleased to meet you

18 September · 11:00 - 16:00  · Atrium

You’re invited to take a seat on the bench, "Pleased To Meet You". The artwork by Johannes Langkamp is a bench with hundreds of wheels. With this work the artist turns sitting still into a game.

Johannes Langkamp (1985) is a German artist who is based in Rotterdam ever since he was studying at the AKI in Enschede. Langkamp creates spatial work in which he often plays and experiments with the relation between space and flat surface. In his spatial work he often uses movement. For his video work, movement is his point of departure.

With the work "Pleased To Meet You", he created an object with which he transfers his curiosity and enthusiasm to play onto the visitor.

Lunch lecture -  This can't be a coincidence

September 18 · 12:00 – 13:00 · Speakers' Corner

In this interactive and dynamic show, Lisa Loeb and Daniel Paarlberg dive into the fascinating world of conspiracy theories and fake news. Why do intelligent people sometimes believe misleading information—and how does that affect collaboration and decision-making within organizations? With humor, psychological quizzes, and surprising insights, they offer practical tools for effectively tackling misinformation. Of course, there will also be time for questions.
And we’ll provide a light lunch!

This is a Dutch spoken event

About the speakers

Lisa Loeb, comedian and writer, is known for her sharp columns on De Nieuws BV (NPO Radio 1), her bestseller BANG, and numerous television appearances. She skillfully addresses sensitive topics with intelligence, humor, and self-deprecation—telling stories that matter.

Daniel Paarlberg, sociologist and former McKinsey strategist, brings a deeply analytical perspective. He uncovers the underlying mechanisms of misinformation and groupthink and provides methods to strengthen your organization’s resilience.

Together, Lisa and Daniel host the popular podcast The Conspiracy Pyramid, co-authored the bestseller This Can’t Be a Coincidence, and are now touring theaters with the accompanying lecture performance.

After the lecture, the book This Can’t Be a Coincidence will be available for purchase and signing!

Taking a stand: Protest and Power in Sports

18 September · 14:00 - 15:00 uur · Speakers' Corner

From the raised fists of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest on the NFL sidelines, and Kendrick Lamar’s striking Super Bowl performance—athletes and artists have long used the global stage of sport to challenge injustice and spark conversation.
In this interactive session, we’ll explore how protest in sports has evolved over time, drawing connections between past and present. Together, we’ll examine the role of race, representation, and resistance, and ask: What does it mean to take a stand today? And how do these acts of protest resonate beyond the stadium?

Expect to engage, reflect, and discuss.
Spoken language: English

This session is a reflection of what among other things will be discussed in the minor Art of Protest.
