Spirited Away (2001)
Spirited Away opens with a family outing that ends up at an abandoned amusement park where the parents of ten-year-old Chihiro are promptly transformed into enormous pigs. The park turns out to be a resting place for all sorts of gods and spirits who have finished their time among humans. Chihiro, along with her friend Haku, learns the absurd rules of her new, precariously capitalist world and transforms from an ordinary spoiled girl into a confident heroine. For many years, it was the most-watched animated film in its homeland Japan and marked Miyazaki's breakthrough to a wide audience in the West, where this unforgettable adventure won a Golden Bear and an Oscar.
