New Opportunities for Queer Inclusion
Sexual citizenship means that everyone should be free to develop as a sexual being, without interference. That children have access to information and, where needed, the resources that allow them to develop sexually in freedom. That women and queer people can experience and express their own sexuality without fear of discrimination, violence or exclusion.
In this lecture, we explore how laws that support queer emancipation and shape behaviour – such as same-sex marriage and consent legislation – can become more deeply embedded in society’s attitudes and values. So that queer emancipation advances not only in law, but the principles behind these laws are also reflected in the attitudes of children, young people and adults.
Throughout the lecture, we use four supposed oppositions to further explore the concept of sexual citizenship:
- Nature – culture
- Male – female
- Love – sex
- Private – public
As always, it's free for students and staff! No need to sign up.
