For years, peace in Europe felt like a given

We’ll be talking to journalist and Europe expert Caroline de Gruyter about war, peace and a changing Europe, prompted by her new book Zondagskinderen. Europeanen, oorlog en vrede (Sunday’s Children: Europeans, War and Peace).

De Gruyter is a correspondent for NRC and has spent many years reporting from Brussels, Vienna and Geneva. In Zondagskinderen, she explores what eight decades of peace have meant for Europe – and what happens now that peace can no longer be taken for granted. How is Europe changing as war returns to the continent, the United States becomes a less reliable ally, and Russia and China seek to expand their influence?

Dutch newspaper Trouw has called De Gruyter “one of the sharpest observers of the European Union’s successes and setbacks.”

Why you’ll want to be there

The choices Europe makes today will shape the world in which your generation will work, vote and have a say. How much should we invest in defence? Can we still count on the United States? What place will Ukraine have in Europe? And how should we deal with Russia and China?

These may sound like big geopolitical questions, but they are getting closer to home. Caroline de Gruyter will help us understand what is at stake – and what choices Europe has.
