About Sarah
Sarah Carlier (1981) explores how we assign meaning to the world around us and how we shape it. She feels a growing need to create space for slowing down, wonder, and attention—qualities that are often under pressure in a society driven by efficiency and control.
Inspiration from the everyday
Carlier draws inspiration from the everyday: the traces people leave in public spaces, objects, and repetitive actions like traditions and rituals. By collecting these and following her imagination, she establishes new connections and opens up perspectives on things that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Re-seeing
Her work ranges from photographic or cinematic installations in museums to performances or interventions in public spaces, always with the intent to blur the lines between the personal and the collective, the everyday and the museum. For her, art is an invitation to relearn how to look, slow down, and discover new perspectives. It’s never just for looking at but also for engaging with and reflecting on the structures in which we live.
Sarah Carlier studied Photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and earned a master’s in Photography from AKV/St. Joost in Breda. Her work has been exhibited at Stroom The Hague, Noorderlicht Groningen, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and FOMU Antwerp.
